Special Pup Rescued from Kincade Fire

For the third year in a row, ARF’s disaster relief team has deployed in response to deadly wildfires in California. When clearing dogs and cats from shelters within the evacuation zone, ARF met a very special pup — Lottie. She may look like an ordinary, happy dog, but this young shepherd mix has quite a story to tell.

In an extremely rare occurrence, Lottie went into cardiac arrest during anesthesia and again during recovery from routine surgery. That’s right, without even taking Sonoma County’s Kincade Fire into account, this adorable puppy had literally survived death. Twice. But she wasn't in the clear yet.

Celebrating Veterans Day with Another Year of Pets and Vets
110619Veterans.jpg

With another Veterans Day upon us, we'd like to reiterate how proud we are of the men, women, and canines of Pets and Vets. By pairing specially-selected shelter dogs with military veterans suffering from PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, anxiety, depression, and other service-related illnesses, ARF is Saving Both Ends of the Leash®. Under the supervision of our expert instructors, veterans train the dogs as their very own “battle buddies” to help them re-acclimate to civilian life.

Next month, another 15 veteran and service dog teams will graduate from our program, which continues to grow every year.

Keep Pets Safe on Thanksgiving
ThanksgivingCat

As we gather to give thanks on November 28, be extra mindful of your pets. Many holiday foods including garlic, onions, raisins, grapes, and chocolate are toxic for your furry companions. Even delicious turkey scraps under the dinner table could increase risks of pancreatitis.

But that's not to say they can't join in on the holiday fun! Dogs love the crunch of air-popped popcorn, baby carrots, or a fresh apple (just not the core!). Cats can get in a festive mood with a live catnip plant or cat grass.

Alternatively, consider bonding over some extra playtime or a long walk before guests arrive. No matter how you spend Thanksgiving with your pets, be safe as you celebrate health and happiness for all creatures this year.
