Bus Driver Finds Surprising Canine Passenger

We don’t know where Kerouac came from ... we just know where he ended up. At the end of a long day of driving through the city, a San Francisco MUNI bus driver heard a soft whimpering from the back of the bus. Upon investigation, she found a scared, young Dachshund mix with his tail tucked between his legs. He was leashed to a backpack with a note reading, “I need a home.”

Unable to take him in, the bus driver took Kerouac to a local city shelter. When ARF met him, he was still afraid of his own shadow. Read more...

ARF Teams up with BISSELL to Empty the Shelter

We're thrilled to once again join forces with Cathy Bissell and BISSELL Pet Foundation on Saturday, October 12 for Empty the Shelters! One of more than 125 shelters participating nationwide, ARF will be waiving all adoption fees for cats, dogs, kittens, and puppies to find loving homes and empty our shelter. Adoptions will open at noon on Saturday, but we expect a crowd so don't be afraid to arrive early!

Pets and Vets Takes to DC for Bipartisan Veteran Service Dog Bill

ARF Executive Director Elena Bicker recently spoke to public affairs activists for the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC) and held Capitol Hill briefings regarding ARF’s Pets and Vets program. “It’s important that we share our experiences with those who can influence development of psychiatric service dog programs for veterans,” Bicker said. “We’ve seen amazing results and want to see future programs designed to benefit the well-being of both veterans and dogs.”

Rep. Steve Stivers (R-OH) has filed HR 4305, the Puppies Assisting Wounded Servicemembers (PAWS) for Veteran Therapy Act, which sets up a Department of Veterans Affairs pilot to promote nonprofit programs similar to ARF’s, with an emphasis on veterans participating in the training of their own dogs and a positive-reinforcement training curriculum.
