A Litter-ally Surprising Rescue!

In late October, ARF was contacted by a small, rural animal shelter that was bursting at the seams. They were facing the frightening realization that they would have to soon start euthanizing members of their overflowing shelter population. Their distress call was frantic and heartbreaking. ARF jumped at the chance to save these animals’ lives, opening our doors to their care and adoption in the Bay Area. What we didn’t know was that the animals included Katy, a two-year-old hound mix, who was ready to give birth at any moment. The rescue would soon grow from 15 to 22!
Our veterinary clinic staff was quick to assess and ready to assist, as Katy’s puppies arrived at ARF less than 48 hours after their mother. With our team’s help and reassurance, Katy gave birth to seven healthy and happy puppies. Sweet Katy was relaxed and content as she cleaned her mewling pups, never knowing the danger they’d just escaped.

Emmy Award-Winning Journalist and Host Maria Menounos recently visited ARF to learn how the Pets and Vets service dog training program saves both ends of the leash. Her report will air on Thanksgiving Day during the National Dog Show presented by Purina® (noon - all time zones on NBC), which will also honor Tony La Russa and a Pets and Vets graduate team. You can keep the support going by showing off your furry friend on social media! From today until November 25, Purina will donate $1 (up to $25,000) to ARF’s Pets and Vets program for every unique Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram post that includes @Purina and #DogThanking describing how you’re thankful for your pet!

As we give thanks on November 22, be sure to be mindful of your pet. Many common holiday foods including garlic, onions, raisins, grapes, and chocolate are dangerous. Even those delicious turkey scraps under the dinner table could increase risks of pancreatitis.
Want to offer a special tasty treat just for them? Dogs love the crunch of both air-popped popcorn and baby carrots. Cats can get in a festive mood with the addition of a live catnip plant or cat grass. Even better? Consider bonding over some extra playtime or a nice long walk before guests arrive. No matter how you spend your Thanksgiving, be safe as you celebrate health and happiness for all creatures, great and small this year.
