Make a Difference for 60 Cents a Day—Do it for Maggie

MaggieLooking into the eyes of the animals we save every day, numbers don’t immediately come to mind. We think of the journey, not the miles, each dog and cat travels before arriving at ARF. At eight months of age, Maggie’s young life was filled with pain and misery before we rescued her. When arriving at the public animal shelter, our rescue team saw a trusting face behind the worried brow, crushed paw and beautiful buff fur marred with pellet wounds. When her cage door was opened, Maggie did not run to us with a wagging tail like so many dogs we rescue. She tentatively stepped into our open arms, paused a moment, just to make sure she was safe, before nuzzling her head into our laps. Read more…

Yes, You Can Clicker Train Your Cat!

Clicker Train Your CatWe all have things that we would prefer our cats do (or not do), but how do we communicate these desires to our independent feline companions? That’s where the clicker comes in! Most are familiar with clicker training for dogs, but this simple tool has been used to train all kinds of animals, from mice to whales. The sound a clicker produces will serve as a signal for your cat that what she’s doing is correct, making a repeat performance of the good behavior more likely. Read more…

Pet Loss Support Group: A Helping Paw In Times Of Need

Pet Loss Support GroupThe loss of a beloved animal companion can leave us reeling as we struggle to move forward without our furry best friend by our side. ARF is proud to partner with Hospice Of The East Bay to offer a Pet Loss Support Group at ARF’s campus every first Tuesday of the month, from noon-1:30 PM. Feelings of grief will be explored and processed in this supportive, therapeutic small group lead by a licensed family therapist. This group is open to the public and free of charge. Register today.

Happy Tails: Sea Girt

Sea GirtYo ho! Sailing the seas alone can be scary for a young lass without a family, but playful, outgoing Sea Girt was a brave puppy buccaneer who was adopted by a whole crew of new mateys! In her latest adventures, swashbuckling Sea Girt (now named Riley) has been promoted to first mate. Her rank affords her treats, feline crewmates to play with, and lots of love. No fear of a mutiny here - Riley wouldn’t trade her newfound treasure for all the loot in Davy Jones’ Locker! Read more adoption stories…
