It All Started with One Cat...

On May 7, 1990, a stray cat ran onto the ball field and frantically searched for a way out until she hesitated at Tony La Russa's feet. Somehow, she must have known he would keep her safe.

Tony and his wife Elaine took responsibility for finding "Evie" a home. They were dismayed to learn not a single animal shelter in the area could take her in, leaving her with no chance for survival.

And so ARF began, with their dream – and a small group of dedicated people who cared. With the help of our friends, more than 30,000 dogs and cats have been saved since that inspiring moment on the baseball diamond.
